theatron (θέατρον) : THEH-ah-tron

(Greek; pl. theatra: “the seeing place” of the Greek theatre). The audience sat in the theatron to watch a performance of a Greek play: alternate name, koilon, a hollow or cavity. The theatron originally referred to the audience space of the Greek theatre, but later became synonymous with the entire structure consisting of the spaces for both the audience as well as the performance; Roman spelling: theatrum.
